Drakendorp - Caves of Terratopia

Come visit Drakendorp and its caves, where those who strive for a harmonious existence live, work and play. And see if you can uncover the secrets they keep.

Welcome to Drakendorp!

Nestled amid the rolling foothills and mountains of TerraTopia stands a small village. A mere echo of its once-prosperous self, Drakendorp, was once a rich village known for its use of raw material mined from the neighbouring caves.

Now a much more sleepy village, the inhabitants invite you into their world. Learn how they have repurposed many buildings, open spaces, and changed their harvesting methods to live happy, but humble, lives in harmony with the local wildlife. Discover the history behind the myth and their respect for it and its Dragon.

The Village square offers a place to relax and gather, and during certain times of the year the locals put on festivals and events to celebrate local holidays and traditions.

Step into the Village Garden where flowers bloom and learn more about the sustainable ways the villagers use water and harvest fruits and vegetables. After, make your way over to the Guarded Grotto Restaurant to taste their bountiful produce. Perhaps, you are looking for a calming area. In that case, delve into the

Quiet Place where locals go to meditate and listen to the sounds of the caves.

For those who want to unearth even more behind the story of Drakendorp the villagers invite you to take a trip inside the caves and learn the secrets behind the myth. Flowing through the cave tunnels, will you discover the real truth behind the dragon?

CONCEPT GALLERY:

Why Drakendorp?

Due to TerraTopia’s location, within the central area of EuroSana which draws numerous parallels to the European continent, we decided to draw on these parallels and base the land to be a representation of a historic European village (Belgium, Germany and Great Britain were used as examples). The caves have then drawn their inspiration following on from the European theme from the Balkan region. This area is a great example due to its cultural ambiguity and direct correlation to the site, lying between water and mountains. This has enabled us to find real life examples of villages and caves to draw inspiration from, also leading to the discovery of the animal we have based the land upon, the olm.

The Masterplan was created with the following in mind:

  • Built form in the “village style” will provide gateways into the land

  • There is an Event space to front the river's edge giving opportunity for shows/events to be enjoyed from both inside and outside the land. This is slightly larger in size to the previous event space (mentioned from client this space is integral). Opportunity to cover this space temporarily if needed.

  • The Village Square - centred around a water fountain feature (elaborate beautiful olm/dragon themed fountain) this can be seen through the entrances into the land as well as from across the river

  • Restaurant to have outside deck seating viewing the lake. The restaurant will also have a second floor area which can be used in peak periods or rented for private events

  • Both rides to exit via a joint shop

  • Service yard and staff area located within the land with external access
